Devlog of the race without dice

The inspiration for this game comes from the idea given to me by Mr. Tashan: if there are no dice, what can replace dice?

My answer is color.

So this board game appeared. It doesn’t work like this at the very beginning: you just need to build a path to the yellow heart with other players, and whoever gets there first gets the yellow heart. But after experimenting, we found that the sub-game flow became very fast, and no one wanted to place the card two spaces away from the yellow heart – because no one wanted to pave the way for the opponent.

So, the game becomes surrounding the yellow heart with cards. Originally, only one card could be placed per turn, but it has become two cards. When only one card is allowed to be drawn and one card is placed, the proportion of luck becomes larger, and the player does not think about it, but completely depends on what was drawn at that time. After changing to draw three cards, putting one or two cards and needing to discard the extra cards, leaving only one on the table, the amount of calculation for the player becomes larger and the game starts to become interesting. Players need to judge which card should be kept in their hand to gain the greatest advantage according to the situation on the board, and also need to think about how the cards in their hand should be placed to avoid the opponent winning as much as possible.

Therefore, how to balance luck and challenge should be considered when designing tabletop games. Relying solely on luck will make the game unchallenging, and relying solely on the player’s thinking to complete the game will cause the player to think too much and feel tired. Making a choice between them is a comfortable gaming experience.
